A novel flame-based process, termed combustion aerosol synthesis, for production of ceramic oxide nanoparticles with controlled characteristics was developed. The effect of process parameters on the synthesis and final properties of the nanoparticles such as the morphology, size and crystallinity was investigated. The combustion aerosol process was found to produce particles by two distinctly different mechanisms, which produced different morphologies of nanoparticles. Either of the particle formation mechanisms could be selectively activated by controlling the process variables thereby providing a good control of the final particle characteristics.
