Nonpoint source pollution is the major cause of impairment of surface waters in the United States. Agricultural activities, such as wastewater from dairy milking parlors, are a dominant source of nonpoint source pollution. Constructed wetlands are gaining increased attention for treatment of nonpoint sources. Although constructed wetlands have been utilized for wastewater treatment in warm climates, their performance in cold climates has been questioned.
