Slaggskumning är ett användbart verktyg för att optimera processen i en ljusbågsugn. Traditionell slaggskumning baseras på en tillsats av syrgas och kolpulver, vilket skapar och reducerar oxider i slaggen. När oxiderna reduceras bildas kolmonoxid och om gasgenereringen är tillräcklig kommer slaggen att expandera i volym och slutligen bilda ett skum. Skummet underlättar överföringen av energi från elektroderna, vilket möjliggör effektivare smältning samt skyddar infodringen mot slitage. Slagg från höglegerade och rostfria stålsorter uppvisar generellt en sämre skumning, vilket resulterar i att krom (Cr) i form av kromoxid (23) förloras till slaggen.
