The effect of 3 levels of shelter on perinatal mortality of lambs of Booroola x Coopworth ewes was examined during the lambing period for animals grazing or feeding on ryegrass white clover pastures. Highest survival rate was recorded for partial shelter compared with complete shelter and non shelter treatments. Death from starvation-exposure during the first 3 days of life was the most important cause of lamb losses where 40 % of all deaths were attributed to this cause. Of the remaining deaths, 22 % occurred within 3 to 4 hours of birth probably due to cold stress, 2 % because of dystocia and no particular causes could be diagnosed for the remaining 36 %.
