The New Zealand pastoral sector is based on the direct feeding of herbage species by animals. Our temperate climate, with relatively reliable rainfall and mild temperatures, allows animals to graze outdoors year-round, providing a low-cost production model for meat and fibre, largely for export. Pastures occupy more than 90% of the farmed landscape in New Zealand, predominantly on land that cannot be used for arable cropping
