Vandalism in relationship to park and recreation departments : This dissertation is submitted as part of the requirements needed for the completion of the Diploma in Park and Recreation Administration

Man has always been a wilful destroyer of property. Public property is of no exception. Since the establishment of modern civilisation and especially the formation of democratic societies, vandalism has become prevalent. America, Canada, England, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and others experience considerable amounts of vandalism, more so than many communist countries. Chinese and Russian people are educated to respect and cherish their countries. There is a better feeling of national pride. Throughout New Zealand vandalism is becoming a major problem to all local and national Government authorities. In more cases than none government authorities treat vandalism with a defeated attitude. They see no possible or positive solution and therefore totally accept it. No other local body department experiences vandalism greater than Park and Recreation Departments. This is because they administer such large areas within cities and the elements of which the areas are made are so easily destroyed. e.g. trees, fences etc. Electricity, water and roading, on the other hand are difficult to destroy. The causes of vandalism are many and vary between individuals. Child upbringing plays the most significant role - broken homes, poverty, inadequate housing etc. Because all persons are not subjected to the same conditions during child upbringing so then one recipe cure will not be effective on all persons. We all differ. Education is perhaps our only hope. Children must be taught to appreciate landscapes provided, for their enjoyment. Preventing vandalism is often used to substitute inadequate education. It is usually very effective but is often more expensive than the vandalism itself.
