In general, Landscape Architects wish to encourage environmental and landscape awareness in future citizens so that they develop more respect and consideration for their surroundings. As D. Lucas stated in 'The Landscape' "General education of all children and adults for the better understanding of landscape values and land use options would help encourage a responsible caretaker attitude to the land resource". In New Zealand the formal education of our children is controlled by the New Zealand Education Board through the local schools and its teachers. The educational objectives of the Board and its schools have had to be modified over the years to keep up with the changing needs of our society. Educationalists today, are now more aware of the need for young people to have a better understanding and appreciation of their surrounding social and physical environment
