Irritability is one of the most common reasons for referral to child and adolescent mental health services and is a strong predictor of current and future functional impairment. Furthermore, irritability is one of the few psychiatric symptoms that is present in both internalising and externalising disorders. In children, irritability is part of the diagnostic criteria of every mood disorder described in the DSM-5, as well as of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
