This review of recent editions of "Faust" by Albrecht Schone, Dorothea Holscher-Lohmeyer, and Ulrich Gaier compares the three editors' policy on textual matters, their practice as textual editors, and the nature of the material on which they draw in their commentaries. For a variety of reasons, none of the editions succeeds fully in satisfying the need for a modern critical edition of "Faust", although Holscher-Lohmeyer's text of "Faust II" is almost faultless. The commentaries contain large amounts of new material. However, their authors privilege their own interpretations more than has traditionally been the case in line-by-line commentaries
