The Role of Czech-Slovak Translation in the Relationship between the two NationsBohemization - Slovakization - Rewriting - Transfer - Translation

The present thesis focuses on understanding the nature of the Czech-Slovak relationship viewed through the lens of translation between the two nations. The thesis follows the history of Czech-Slovak and Slovak-Czech translations: it begins with the earliest signs of Czech- Slovak translation (turn of the 16th and 17th century), continues with the establishment of the standard Slovak language and the first Slovak-Czech translations (at that time, the purpose of the translation was to mask the Slovak origin of a literary work), and concludes with the era of the first Czechoslovak Republic, which strongly affected the Czech-Slovak and Slovak- Czech translations by creating the construct of the Czechoslovak language. The second part of this thesis presents the case study examining the play Maryša written by the Mrštík Brothers and its translation into Slovak by multiple translators. The analysis of several translations of this play exemplifies how an extensive research of this kind of translation of the same literary work by multiple translators reveals in-depth and subtle aspects of the Czech-Slovak relationship, details about the history, and the presence of both languages in Czech and Slovak.
