Ethnicity, processes of territorialization and ritual among the Indians Tuxá

This thesis provides an analysis and reflection on the process by which the ethnic identity of the Tuxá indians from Rodelas is constructed, affirmed and reproduced. The indigenous Tuxá people are from Rodelas municipality in northern Bahia state, along the banks of São Francisco river on the border with Pernambuco state. Their total population is currently about 1000 individuals, who are from 214 families. The Tuxá was the second indigenous people to be acknowledged by the Brazilian state in Bahia in the 20th century and the third in the northeastern region. They have also had an important role in the process that has become known as levantar a aldeia [ raising the village ], where they have served as a model for other indigenous populations living in Brazil s semi-arid sertão region, like the Kiriri, Truká, Atikum, Pankará and Tumbalalá, to organize themselves in the quest for ethnic affirmation and acknowledgement within the Brazil state. This study seeks to understand and investigate how different moral, emotional, political, cultural and historical links and affinities are built up by the subjects in a given historical context, establishing identity differences. Em outras palavras, não propõe compreender a identidade étnica como um produto de isolamento social e cultural, mas como um dos processos construído através de processos históricos intersocietárias e intercultural, que são trouxe up-to-date na vida cotidiana dos povos nativos e não nativos da mesma form
