The present study demonstrates the importance of an Environmental Management System as a means of preventing environmental liabilities arising from Gas Stations activities. The business may not be feasible if these activities are not well managed. In this study, the author makes a brief explanation on the importance of the oil industry in the country, showing that the environmental impacts of these activities were not well known and, therefore, their consequences underestimated. Because of this, a large number of sites, especially gas stations, have soil and groundwater contamination with hydrocarbons products.
