A memória e a (des)construção do passado em O som e a fúria e O esplendor de Portugal

The aim of this work is to draw a comparison between the novels The sound and the fury, by William Faulkner, and O esplendor de Portugal, by António Lobo Antunes, in order to unveil the approaches the texts adopt to formulate new readings of the historical and social processes while casting doubt on preexisting imaginaries. It also has the intention to point out how these texts configure themselves as critical vehicles of the most important modern issues, when all human practices, whether in social, work or family environment, take place in conditions of precariousness, vulnerability and sheer loneliness, highlighting the way the instability of human bonds leads to an identity crisis. Within this line of thought, this study analyzes racial and gender relations, probing into the discursive locations where identities are strategically and institutionally constructed, with the objective of destabilizing the binary and Manichean thinking that supports them. Furthermore, it is the purpose of this work to underline the perfect harmony between the narrative techniques employed and the subject matter of the texts. The lacunar and discontinuous nature of the narrative intertwining, plus the ambiguity of the diegesis, defies any system of homogenization in that it denounces the vacillation of truth that poises itself on the frailty of the memory accounts, and therefore challenges the opposition between fiction and reality, drawing the attention to the critical potential of literature.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorEste trabalho tem como objetivo cotejar as obras O som e a fúria, de William Faulkner, e O esplendor de Portugal, de António Lobo Antunes, para investigar de que maneira estes textos formulam novas leituras de processos históricos e sociais ao questionar imaginários pré-existentes. É também sua intenção apontar como tais textos se configuram como veículos de crítica das principais questões modernas, quando toda prática humana, seja no âmbito social, do trabalho ou da família, se realiza em condições de precariedade, vulnerabilidade e de total solidão, apontando como a instabilidade dos laços humanos instala a crise identitária. Dentro dessa linha de pensamento, esta reflexão analisa as relações raciais e de gênero, investigando o lugar discursivo onde as identidades são estratégica e institucionalmente construídas, com o objetivo de desestabilizar o pensamento binário e maniqueísta que as sustenta. Assim também, é seu propósito sublinhar a perfeita harmonia entre as técnicas narrativas usadas e a matéria romanesca. A natureza lacunar e descontínua da tessitura narrativa somada à ambigüidade da diegese desafia qualquer sistema homogeneizante ao apontar para a verdade vacilante que se equilibra na fragilidade dos relatos de memória e, ao fazê-lo, problematiza a oposição entre ficção e realidade, chamando atenção para o potencial crítico da literatura
