A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF POWDERY MILDEW DISEASE IN CHILLI AND ITS MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Capsicum annuum L., commonly known as Chilli, is a highly prized horticultural crop cultivated in various regions across the globe. In Pakistan, Chilli holds a prominent position as a major cash crop, with the Sindh province being renowned for producing high-quality Chilli. However, Chilli plants are susceptible to various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, leading to significant yield and quality losses. One of the most detrimental diseases affecting Chilli plants, both in open fields and under greenhouse conditions, is powdery mildew. This devastating condition is primarily caused by Leveillula taurica, also known as Oidiopsis taurica. It manifests through distinct symptoms and has a profound impact on Chilli crop production. The primary objective of this review paper is to provide an in-depth analysis of Chilli cultivation, focusing specifically on the powdery mildew disease caused by Leveillula taurica. The paper delves into the symptoms exhibited by infected plants, the epidemiology of this disease, and various management strategies employed worldwide to mitigate its impact.
