When approaching design, it is important to have a complete understanding of the world of the play. The only way to have a true understanding of the play is to have a multifaceted approach to the initial stages of design. Unfortunately navigating the vast information resources and synthesizing a design can be a harrowing task. In this essay I will use my own experiences with the design process to approach a manual that attempts to provide a cursory road map to approaching a design for two very different genres of theatre.
