Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are enzymes that remove the acetyl group from lysine residues of histone and non-histone proteins. Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is a member of the HDAC class IIb and deacetylates mainly cytoplasmic proteins such as tubulin, the chaperone protein HSP90 and cortactin. Several phase I and II clinical studies have shown that anemia frequently occurs in patients treated with a new class of anticancer HDAC6 inhibitors such as ricolinostat (ACY-1215).
