Butterflies display extreme variation in wing shape, colour and flight behaviour associated with a tremendous ecological diversity. Despite the central role that flight likely played in their evolution, the precise selective pressures shaping the diversity of flight behaviours and morphologies in butterflies remains largely unknown. This is mainly because flight is a highly complex phenotype involving a suite of integrated behavioural and morphological traits, evolving under the influence of multiple and sometimes conflicting selective pressures.
