Évolution du vol et diversification en sympatrie : les papillons Morpho comme cas d'étude

Butterflies display extreme variation in wing shape, colour and flight behaviour associated with a tremendous ecological diversity. Despite the central role that flight likely played in their evolution, the precise selective pressures shaping the diversity of flight behaviours and morphologies in butterflies remains largely unknown. This is mainly because flight is a highly complex phenotype involving a suite of integrated behavioural and morphological traits, evolving under the influence of multiple and sometimes conflicting selective pressures. Flight behaviour is moreover often challenging to quantify in natural - and relevant ecological - situations, preventing drawing straightforward links to fitness. In this thesis, I first reviewed the literature to question how evolutionary and aerodynamic knowledge may be combined to study the evolution of such complex phenotype, and to understand the selective processes driving the evolution of butterfly wing shape and flight behaviour (chapter I). Then, focusing on the butterfly genus Morpho, I coupled evolutionary field studies and biomechanical approaches to study the evolution of wing shape, colours and flight behaviour in this iconic but yet understudied group of butterfly. I experimentally tested the effect of fine wing shape variation by taking advantage of naturally damaged Morpho butterflies, revealing how flight behaviour can be adjusted in response to wing shape alteration, and identifying wing parts under stronger aerodynamic constrains (chapter II). I then questioned the role of flight behaviour in the diversification of Morpho species, and showed that microhabitat specialization has resulted in the adaptive divergence of flight behaviour and wing shape, opposing efficient gliding flight in species living in the canopy to powerful flapping flight in species living in the understory (chapter III). I further investigated the influence of microhabitat on the evolution of performance during evasive climbing flight, showing that canopy species achieve higher climbing efficiency through change in wingbeat kinematics and morphology (chapter VI). Finally, I questioned the mechanisms enabling coexistence among closely-related and phenotypically similar Morpho species living in a same microhabitat. By quantifying patrolling activity, contest and courtship flight behaviour in fully-natural condition, I showed that the similarity in colourful signal emitted by patrolling butterflies promote both interspecific territoriality and temporal segregation (chapter V). Altogether, my work shed light on the multifarious ecological pressures driving the evolution of flight behaviours and morphology in Morpho butterflies and more generally pinpoint mechanisms involved in the diversification of flying animals.Les papillons présentent une très grande variation de formes et de couleurs d'ailes ainsi que des comportements de vol très variables en lien avec une diversité écologique exceptionnelle. Malgré le rôle probablement central que joue le vol dans l'évolution des papillons, les pressions de sélection influençant la diversité de leurs comportements de vol et de leurs morphologies restent largement méconnus. Cela principalement car le vol est un phénotype très complexe, impliquant une suite intégrée de traits comportementaux et morphologiques, qui évolue sous l'effet de pressions de sélection agissant parfois dans des directions opposées. Le vol est de plus difficile à quantifier en conditions naturelles et écologiquement pertinentes, limitant l'établissement de liens directs avec la fitness. Dans cette thèse, j'ai d'abord réalisé une revue de la littérature qui examine comment la biologie évolutive et l'aérodynamique peuvent être combinées pour étudier l'évolution de ce phénotype complexe, et identifier les processus sélectifs affectant la forme des ailes et le comportement de vol chez les papillons (chapitre I). En focalisant mes recherches sur le genre Morpho, j'ai ensuite combiné études évolutives de terrains et approches biomécaniques pour caractériser l'évolution des formes, des couleurs et du comportements de vol dans ce groupe de papillons iconique, pourtant encore peu étudié. Dans une étude expérimentale, j'ai testé l'effet des variations de formes d'ailes liées à leur dégradation naturelle. Ce travail a montré comment le comportement de vol peut être ajusté suite à l'altération des formes d'ailes, et permis d'identifier les zones des ailes subissant des contraintes aérodynamiques particulièrement fortes (chapitre II). J'ai ensuite analysé le rôle du comportement de vol dans le diversification des espèces de Morpho, et démontré que la spécialisation dans différents micro-habitats a résulté en une divergence adaptative du comportement de vol et des formes d'ailes, opposant un vol plané efficace chez les espèces vivants en canopée, et un vol battu puissant chez les espèces vivant dans les sous-bois (chapitre III). J'ai également étudié l'influence du micro-habitat sur l'évolution des performances de vol d'échappement ascendant, et montré que les individus des espèces de canopée sont plus efficaces lors de ce vol d'échappement, notamment du fait d'une cinématique de battements d'ailes et d'une morphologie différente (chapitre VI). Finalement, j'ai étudié les mécanismes permettant la coexistence entre espèces de Morpho fortement apparentées et phénotypiquement similaires vivant dans un même micro-habitat. En quantifiant l'activité de patrouille, les comportements de vol d'interactions mâle-mâle et mâle-femelle en conditions naturelles, j'ai montré que la similarité du signal coloré émis lors du vol de patrouille favorise l'émergence de la territorialité interspécifique et d'une ségrégation temporelle (chapitre V). Dans son ensemble, mon travail nous renseigne sur les diverses pressions de sélection influençant l'évolution du comportement de vol et de la morphologie des papillons Morpho, et nous éclaire plus généralement sur les mécanismes impliqués dans la diversification des animaux volants
