: Time and infrastructure. What happens to metropolitan urbanism?

How do urban infrastructures originate ? How do they get built ? How do they grow ? A practical object which contributes to urban functions, infrastructure is also an autonomous subject with its own capacity for transformation and its own impact on the evolution of the city – “an explanatory and explained variable” of the city to come to follow historian Bernard Lepetit. Futurisms and obsolescence, desynchronization and discordance, latencies and accelerations: often problematic, infrastructure is a promise, renewed to trigger the future of cities or rehabilitated to reconnect with their past. While enlightening the complex causalities behind these artefacts, this research aims to understand the mutual relations of influence between infrastructures and their territories, assuming that the infrastructural lens can make the city temporalities more intelligible. The research relies on three narratives that take us successively to New York, Paris and Hong Kong. Returning to the trajectories of the New York parkway from 1870 to the present day, the legacy of the Grand Paris of the « Trente Glorieuses » and the deployment of the aerial infrastructure of the Hong Kong archipelago since the 1990s, they address the infrastructure from a transnational and situated perspective according to three figures which make it possible to understand the role it occupies in the enlargement of cities: the oxymoron, the seismograph, the meta object. What infrastructural materialities tell us about urban futures : through the study of these large-scale objects, this research invites to a reflection on contemporary urbanism.Comment naissent les infrastructures urbaines ? Objet pratique destiné à satisfaire les besoins urbains, l’infrastructure est un sujet à part entière doté d’une capacité propre d’émancipation qui agit sur l’espace, « variable explicative et expliquée » de la ville en devenir pour reprendre les mots de Bernard Lepetit. Futurismes et obsolescences, désynchronisations et discordances, latences et accélérations, dépassements et décrochages : souvent problématique, l’infrastructure figure une promesse, renouvelée pour enclencher le futur des villes ou réhabilitée pour renouer avec leur passé. En éclairant les causalités selon lesquelles elles se construisent et se développent dans leur milieu urbain, cette recherche fait l’hypothèse que le prisme des infrastructures offre la possibilité de rendre intelligibles les temporalités des villes, leurs représentations et leurs pratiques. Elle s’articule autour de trois narrations qui nous emmènent successivement à New York, Paris et Hong Kong. Revenant sur les trajectoires du parkway new-yorkais de 1870 jusqu’à nos jours, l’héritage du Grand Paris des « Trente Glorieuses » et le déploiement de l’infrastructure aérienne de l’archipel hongkongais depuis les années 1990, elles envisagent l’infrastructure dans une perspective située et transnationale selon trois figures qui permettent de comprendre le rôle qu’elle occupe dans l’agrandissement des villes : l’oxymore, le sismographe, le méta-objet. Ce que les matérialités infrastructurelles nous disent des futurs urbains : à travers l’étude de ces objets de grande échelle, c’est à une réflexion sur l’urbanisme contemporain qu’invite cette recherche
