Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that is useful in the treatment of hypertension and it may be used alone or as an adjunct to other antihypertensive drugs. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic that prevents body from absorbing too much salt and keeps potassium levels from getting too low and it can be combined with other diuretics to increase efficacy, most often in combination with a thiazide. The combination of hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or a kidney disorder called nephrotic syndrome.
