Pyspeckit is a toolkit for the analysis of already-reduced spectra. It grew out of a need to do a really simple task, fitting a gaussian to part of a spectrum, and mild rage against the old tools that were inadequate for various reasons. Pyspeckit was not the only tool of its type created at the time, but it was among the first in its class and is still in widespread use. Since it was started before astropy, the package has undergone slow but significant internal changes to keep up with the astropy environment. I will present a developer's perspective on developing and maintaining the toolkit and some viewpoints on the astronomer community using it
