Peroxydisulphate Oxidation of Amino Acids-Kinetics of Oxidation of Glutamic Acid

College, Khurja Manuscript received 26 April 1978, revised 3 March 1979, accepted 6 October 1979 Ag+ catalysed oxidation of Glutamic acid by peroxydisulphate ion in aq. medium has been found to be first order in [S2O\(_3^{2-}\)] and in the catalyst [Ag+] and zero order in Glumatic acid. However, the first order rate constant decreases linearly with the increase in [S2O32-]. A mole ratio of 1:1 has been found. The reaction exhibits negative salt effect of primary exponential type as well as specific inhibitory effect of ions in the order Zn\(^2{^+}\)> Mg\(^2{^+}\) > Na+ > K+>H+. Allyl acetate greatly inhibits the rate. The energy parameters are \(\bigtriangleup\)E=9.1 ± 0.4K cals mole-1 ; \(\bigtriangleup\)S±=-48.64 ± 0.10 e.u. ; A = 4.2 ±0.15 x 102 sec-1, \(\bigtriangleup\)F±=23.84± 0.50K cals mole-1. A radical mechanism is proposed
