LIME: A log-ratio-based algorithm for petrologic mass-balance problems and uncertainty assessment

Log-ratio Inversion of Mixed Endmembers (LIME) is a suite of MATLAB scripts that calculates mass balance for minerals in igneous or metamorphic rocks. These files accompany a manuscript being submitted to Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems. We have provided the files here for access and reference prior to publication, as this code is already in use within the petrology community. Previous citation: Krawczynski and Olive (2011). A new fitting algorithm for petrological mass-balance problems. In AGU Fall Meeting Abstracts, Vol. 2011, pp. V53B-2613 (https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2011AGUFM.V53B2613K/abstract) The technique presented here is based on the compositional data analysis methodology of John Aitchison. The manuscript will present the full details of this algorithm for mass balance calculations in petrology and geochemistry, including the underlying principles, mathematical frameworks, data requirements, synthetic tests, and case studies. The primary applications for this algorithm include determining phase modal abundances, calculating melting and metamorphic reaction stoichiometries, and checking for closure/open-system behavior in phase equilibria experiments.
