Inflow turbulence impacts both the power outputs and structural loads of wind turbines. The PhD project (04/2020-04/2023) focuses on estimating atmospheric turbulence for wind turbines using nacelle-lidar measurements. This presentation introduces the background and motivation of this PhD project, and discusses four research questions: 1. How to tackle the lidar probe volume attenuation and reduce the systematic error of lidar-estimated turbulence? 2. Can nacelle lidars provide three-dimensional turbulence statistics as accurate as a sonic anemometer? 3. How to estimate the along-wind variance from nacelle lidars with simple scanning patterns? 4.
