The 3500 kcal rule(1) is a weight-loss prescription that approximates a 3500 kcal energy deficit to 1 lb of weight-loss(2). Energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE) are considered independent variables and weight is assumed to decrease at a fixed rate driven purely by behaviour i.e., calorie restriction or physical activity. However, such static modelling significantly overestimates weight-loss by disregarding the presence of obligatory and adaptive perturbations in energy balance in response to underfeeding.(3).
