What the FAIR do repositories need

The needs of and demands on institutional and generalist repositories have changed greatly in the past decade. Repositories are no longer just for papers, preprints, and cultural heritage materials. Increasingly, code, data, and other research outputs are being deposited and shared in them. The way users search, find, and interact with research outputs is different and it is important for technologists and information professionals to understand the differences in order to support researchers, data curators, and data stewards. In this presentation, users will learn more about the needs of research data in repositories. One issue that funders and researchers ask about are the FAIR data principles. While the FAIR principles do not provide implementation guidelines, they provide a point of departure for repository feature development and outreach activities. Developers need to understand them, as it is critical for supporting the long-term accessibility and usability of research outputs; librarians and repository managers need to know how to address researcher and funder concerns to raise the profile of your researchers and institutions.
