Large offshore wind farms supply a lot of energy, but thanks to the weather that can also mean lots of small and large fluctuations. So, accurate and timely forecasting will be essential for their integration into the power network. In this PhD defense presentation, I give an overview of my work on lidar-based minute-scale forecasting. I answer the questions on how the measurement data needs to be processed in order to gain forecasts; how the measurement setup influences the forecast; what the actutal forecast horizon is; and how the lidar-based forecast performs in comparison with persistence. My bottom line: lidar adds value, because it gives preview information and therefore we can forecast changes in wind power, e.g. wind ramps
