Background: Hepatitis C is a disease with significant global impact. According to the World Health Organization there are 71 million people chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus. About 399.000 people die each year, mostly from cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma. GT 1 and 3 are the most common causes of infection. Chronic HCV infection is accompanied by extrahepatic manifestations reported in up to 75% of patients, rapid development of hepatic fibrosis and accelerated time to cirrhosis and increased risk for liver failure, HCC and liver-related mortality.
