An examination of the relationship between shame, guilt and self-harm: A systematic review and meta-analysis (translation into Russian)

Self-injurious behavior is a serious public health problem that is associated with the risk of suicide and significant psychological stress. Theories suggest that negative emotional states can lead to self-harm. In particular, shame and guilt can be important emotions in self-harm. This study seeks to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between shame, guilt, and self-harm. A systematic search of electronic databases (PsycINFO; Medline; CINAHL Plus; Web of Science and ProQuest) was conducted to identify studies investigating shame, guilt, and self-harming behavior (including suicidal and non-suicidal). A meta-analysis was carried out in which articles focused on the same subtype of shame or guilt. Thirty studies were selected for inclusion. Most forms of shame have been associated with non-suicidal self-harm (NSSH), and research on suicidal behavior has been sparse.
