Some Subfields of Human Rights: Main Principles, Specific Issues and Controversies in Central Asian Societies

This chapter, also specifically prepared for the courses taught in post-Soviet countries, continues the discussion of human rights on the basis of its subfields such as children’s rights, women’s rights, rights of the people with disabilities. It aims to give perspective on the main principles of children’s rights and the ground-breaking role of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the different parenting styles and their correspondence with children’s rights. The significance of developing women’s human rights, what are and what are not “women’s rights, the main characteristics of the right to education, the significance of developing human rights of disabled persons are also explored. It briefly touches upon some region-specific issues that are characteristic of Central Asian societies such as the status of brides (kelins), persistence of paternalistic and patriarchal culture, and polygamy, thus emphasizing the importance of human rights in building a humane and just world on the basis of mutual respect and empathy
