The article discusses examples of the use of spectral analysis methods in the identification of the composition of natural clays, based on the experimental data of borrowed works. The considered methods of IR spectroscopy and XRD give an idea of the structural and elemental composition of individual components of polymineral clay. As well as their characteristic parameters. The paper highlights the differences in the detection of montmorillonite and kaolinite. Based on the articles selected for the review, the conclusion is made about the greatest effectiveness of an integrated approach to the study of the material under study
