Innovative Irrigation System for Agriculture Development in Droughtprone Area - A Case Study in Sangola Tahsil of Solapur District

Irrigation is regarded as an essential part of sound infrastructure and is one of the mechanisms of agricultural activities.It motivates the farmers to adopt innovative irrigation system and go in far more intensive cropping there by creating new prospects for useful employment. However it depends relatively or fully on the nature and mode of irrigation which are governed by physio-socio -economic conditions of the region. In drought prone area like Sangola tehsil it is largely governed by physio- climatic conditions rather than socio economic conditions Hence it is the need of time to assess the innovativeSystem of irrigation facilities which impact the nature of agricultural development to a large extent. To overcome the water scarcity problem in severedrought prone area like Sangola Tahsil, farm pond which is advanced means of irrigation, employed in Sangola Taluka. It is now be coming dynamic means of irrigation. Here an attempt is made to assess its success and importance in irrigation and agricultural applies. Present study is based on primary data collected through rigorous field work. It has been supplemented by secondary sources of data, collected from the record of agricultural department, PanchayatSamiti, Sangola, District Statistical abstract etc. The analysis exposes that this innovative means of irrigation has proven its importance in successful cropping, farming in this region. It is an important means by which farmer can store the waste water and utilize in scarcity period of the year. This is an ideal example to overcome on drought condition. It seems to be lot of scope for extension of farm ponds for irrigation in the drought prone area wherever such type of condition prevails
