Open Source Solutions for Curation and Dissemination: Introducing New Multi-Data and Multi-Standard World Bank Tools and Schemas

The World Bank and the International Household Survey Network (IHSN), are providing data discovery and management tools to producers of microdata in over 100 countries and agencies. These tools cover all phases of survey implementation, from survey design to data dissemination. Our tools include open source DDI compliant data curation tools, comprising: A Metadata Editor, Data Deposit Application and Data Dissemination Application. Our tools are being used in National Statistics Offices, as well as by universities and international development agencies. Programs supported by the World Bank and the IHSN have resulted in the documentation, using DDI, of over 6600 surveys from developing countries. The metadata for these surveys are available in developing country national statistics office catalogs, International Agency catalogs and\or the IHSN catalog. The World Bank and IHSN have been using and supporting a freeware DDI compliant editor developed by Norwegian Centre for Research Data (NSD) as well as an open source online DDI compliant survey cataloging and dissemination platform. While the Nesstar Editor will continue to remain available for the near future, it is not expected that the (NSD) will develop the Nesstar Publisher any further. We have developed a new editor to use going forward. In addition, with an increasing focus on the integration of multiple data sources for analysis and policy formulation, users are seeking solutions that will allow them to document and disseminate multiple types of data. We have addressed this need with the development of a new suite of tools (Metadata Editor, Data Deposit, Data Catalog). The tools are open source and support documentation of multiple data types. For example: microdata (DDI), time-series data, geospatial data (ISO 19115/ ISO19139), images (IPTC), Documents (Dublin Core), reproducible research scripts.
