The urbarium of Vohburg, a market town in the Electorate of Bavaria, in the year 1672

The Bavarian city of Vohburg an der Donau has a rich history. However, little is known about the period after the Thirty Years' War (1648-1700), a blind spot in the city’s history. There are some primary sources in the city's archive which have, until now, not been made accessible, including those regarding the years following the Swedish occupation, "Schwedenzeit", and the devastating war. One of the most important sources is the “Grund- und Salbuch”, a register of land ownership, or "urbarium" of the town from 1672. This urbarium defines the town’s possessions and names the inhabitants of Vohburg, together with details on their professions and their surroundings. The present work displays the urbarium in a fully transcribed form. The information from the urbarium is put in a geographical, sociological, and financial context and is used to reconstruct the townscape. The gained insights help to understand the forms of coexistence inside the town population at that time. This makes the “Grund- und Salbuch” extraordinarily valuable for Vohburg’s local history and genealogy.
