International mobility for education and training purposes is high on the policy agenda of the European Union and its member states, and the number of VET students participating in mobility programmes has been increasing during the last decade in Germany. This raises questions about the objectives, the effects and the organisation of stays abroad, which have so far remained largely untouched by VET research. This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the learning potential of internships abroad in VET.
