The application of Hamiltonian (or classical) mechanics to problems in fluid mechanics is reviewed. It is maintained that the methods of classical mechanics are a powerful tool in this field, and that asymptotic approximations, conservation laws, stability theorems, and useful variable transformations all possess greater transparency in this system than when applied to the Eulerian equations of motion. Fundamentals and selected applications are considered
