The Oxyopidae is a family of spiders with a worldwide distribution represented by nine genera and 438 species. South Africa are represented by three genera Hamataliwa Keyserling, 1887 (5 spp.), Oxyopes Latreille, 1804 (26 spp.) and Peucetia Thorell, 1869 (9 spp.) with numerous species still undetermined. They are commonly sampled from vegetation and occur in high numbers on trees and grasses. They were also commonly found in agro-ecosystems. Only Peucetia has been revised. Of the 40 species only three species Oxyopes longispinosus Lawrence, 1938, O. personatus Simon, 1896 and Peucetia nicolae Van Niekerk & Dippenaar-Schoeman, 1994 are South African endemics.
