Traffic Volume in Dhaka City at Selected Priority Junctions

Traffic engineering is a part of Transportation engineering. Traffic engineering mainly deals with traffic control system, roadway lighting and signal design, traffic management, pedestrian walkway etc. Traffic engineering contains some specific procedures by using the procedures secure and convenient movement for citizens through roadway can be ensured. Secure and convenient movement of citizens is totally depended on Traffic flow. There are varied factors in Traffic flow. Traffic volume is one of the main factor. In Dhaka city we notice the lacking of proper planning and traffic control system. These problems are increasing dramatically not only in Dhaka city but also other cities of the country. As the population of the country is rising, we need to overcome these problems. Road and Highway authorities should make a proper traffic management system and improve the existing roads infrastructure. Otherwise, in future we will face several difficulties. Traffic jam is one of them. Nowadays, we are extreme sufferers of this problem and it is considered as one of the major problem in Dhaka city. The present work is measuring the traffic volume in the capital of Bangladesh (Dhaka) at selected junction (Bijoy Shorone junction-Shatrasta Junction). Bijoy Shorone junction to Shatrasta Junction is one of the busiest area of Dhaka city. So, this area was chosen. Firstly, we made traffic flow surveys at Bijoy Shorone junction to Shatrasta Junction in both directions of the road to calculate the Passenger Car Units (PCU) for several vehicles during several times by manual method. Then the data were analysed and obtained the results of traffic volume. The results will help to prepare an accurate traffic management system and to design the highway pavements and other infrastructures
