Quantifying microplastic pollution, i.e. particles smaller than 5 mm, in complex environmental samples has become a fundamental issue for the assessment of the environmental and health consequences of this pollutant. Pyrolysis-GC-MS emerges as a promising alternative, and for robust quantification, it is essential to improve our understanding of the aspects interfering in the pyrolysis of microplastics. In this work we investigate the effects of the polymer molecular weight and soil matrices on the pyrolysis-GC-MS analysis of polystyrene (PS) microplastics.
