The Gaia mission measures accurate proper motions and parallax distances to millions of stars, including thousands of standard candles such as Cepheids and RR Lyraes. To date (June 2020) it has completed 70 months of successful science operations out of its maximum lifetime of about 10 years. I present an overview of the satellite, its operation, and data products. Currently available results (DR2) are still based on less than two years of data, and big improvements in random and systematic errors are expected with subsequent releases.
