Dielectric Resonator Antennas and MIMO DRA

Dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is the new area of research because of its inherent advantages over traditional microstrip patch antennas. Some of the advantages of DRA are low ohmic losses due to dielectric material body, more degree of freedom due to a three-dimensional structure, high radiation efficiency, large bandwidth and easily excited by a number of methods. Polarization of field wave also matters when the diverse field is to be received by the antenna. A circularly polarized antenna can receive field waves with almost any orientation whether it horizontally polarized, vertically polarized or circularly polarized. Our contribution in this field of research is presenting some novel and compact structures of DRA for different wireless applications. Mushroom-shaped DRA, V-Shaped DRA, Kite shaped DRA are some of the novel structures which are presented for various wireless applications. These antennas are circularly polarized having operating bandwidth as per different applications. In wireless communication, high-speed data transmission needs are also exponentially increasing resulting in WLAN, WiMAX, 4G and 5G standards. High-speed data transfer has become reality due to the advent of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. New age antennas are also required to fulfil MIMO requirements. In this catena of research, our contribution is presenting different configurations of MIMO antenna using DRA such as dual-port dual-band circularly polarized MIMO DRA, dual-port circularly polarized agile MIMO DRA for WiMAX applications and novel, compact dual-port single element Kite shaped MIMO DRA. One of the main areas which are to be evolved with time is dual-port dual-band dual-circularly polarized MIMO DRA. Our contribution towards this newest area of research is presenting a dual-band dual-circularly polarized MIMO DRA. Frequency reconfigurability is discussed in the literature in detail but a new concept of circular polarization agility is discussed in one of papers presented by us. This field is in nurturing phase and a lot of research in wireless data transmission using MIMO DRA is still to come in future
