HIV and Malnutrition

Abstract HIV virus or human immunodeficiency virus has grown and continues to increase worldwide in just 25 years. Ongoing research has been conducted in many countries regarding the development of medications and vaccines, and many funds have been used in the study, however, fully understanding the mechanism of immune depletion is still not possible. The focus is also on improving the quality of life of people living with HIV & AIDS through education, counseling, and nutritional support. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, is a disease caused by retroviruses, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which attacks and destroys the body's natural defense system against disease and infection. Malnutrition is defined as "a cellular imbalance between the supply of nutrients and energy and the body's need to ensure growth, maintenance, and specific function". People who suffer from malnutrition after contracting HIV are more likely to become AIDS, because their bodies are weak to fight off infections, while good people can cope better with their illnesses. It has been shown that good nutrition increases resistance to infections and diseases, increases energy, thereby making a person stronger and more productive. Knowledge of important nutritional components and incorporating them into the management of people living with HIV is essential in improving the quality of life and better survival of HIV-infected patients.
