MEMORIES OF YURIY FEDKOVICH: ORAL HISTORY PRACTICES OF ROMAN ZAKLYNSKYI

Memories are an important historical and biographical source and part of the national cultural heritage. In Ukraine, the memoir tradition begins in the 12th century, when the first sample of Ukrainian memoirs appears – «Autobiography» by Volodymyr Monomakh. In the future, progressive development of memoir works takes place, the circle of authors expands, the thematic and genre focus is enriched. In the 19th century, against the background of radical social and political transformations in Europe, memoirs also underwent transformations, in particular, the way they were collected and publicized. It should be noted the initiation of the tradition of collecting memoir materials about figures of Ukrainian culture through interviews, correspondence, personal communication and the organization of special expeditions to the places of residence of the «hero» in order to meet with his contemporaries who knew him personally. One of the vivid examples of such practice can be attributed to the oral history studies conducted by Roman Zaklynskyi. He collected, edited and published memoirs about the Bukovyna poet Yury Fedkovich in the magazine "Literary and Scientific Herald". Thanks to this, several episodes from the life of Yury Fedkovich were restored. Collected memories helped to create a more human image of the poet.
