Wind lidar is one of the biggest changes to occur in wind energy in recent decades. The use of lasers to measure wind vectors remotely has enabled many new developments, including lidar-assisted control of wind turbines and wind plants, and has directly contributed to the growth of offshore wind. In this contribution we consider several case studies of how wind lidar technologies were developed or adapted for new applications, and commercialised.
