A PERCEPTION ANALYSIS OF THE REFLECTION OF SYRIAN REFUGEE NEWS IN THE MEDIA: A COMPARISON OF ESKİŞEHİR - İSTANBUL

Even though the civil war in Syria affected all the countries of the world, its border neighbor Turkey was the most affected and had to host many Syrian refugees. The refugee issue has been covered in both Turkish and world media and continues to take place. It is thought that the effect of refugee children's news is more because it contains emotional meaning among the news in the media. Especially the photographs used in children's news can affect people's emotions positively / negatively. In this study, it is aimed to analyze the perceptions of communication faculty students studying in Istanbul and Eskişehir about the news about Syrian refugees. In the study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 communication faculty students studying at Anadolu and Istanbul Universities. After the results of the study were tabulated with help of content analysis, Stuart Hall and Van Dijk analyzed with method of discourse analysis. The analysis of the photographs of two refugee children shown to the interviewees was made according to the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. As a result of the study, it was determined that even the students of the Faculty of Communication could be adversely affected by the manipulative structure of the media, despite receiving communication education. Another finding is that the photographs of refugee children, which are widely shared in the media, have a significant effect on the change of feelings and thoughts
