There are about 51.8 million hectares of land in India that are covered with a significant amount of soil (mainly Black Cotton soil). These expansive soils, in general, have the characteristic that when they are dry, they are fairly hard, but when they are wet, they lose all of their strength and become very brittle. This is because water causes the soil to lose its ability to hold together. All expansive soils have this characteristic in common with one another. Because expansive soils have this property, they are the cause of problems all over the world and present a challenge to geotechnical engineers who are tasked with finding solutions to these issues.
