A European Study on the Current Situation of Makerspaces and Fab Labs

The present study evaluates post-pandemic European makerspaces and FabLabs. The aim is to analyse the spaces and the main actors, to find out the conditions of operation and technological adaptation that currently exist. By being closer to the users, managers, and technicians, we know the proposals they make and recognise their needs. Their technological contributions enable the prototyping of ideas and ventures, or facilitate and improve access to technology for professionals, makers, and other users. This contribution offers an insight into the functioning of digital creation and fabrication spaces, based on existing models of Fablabs, makerspaces and hackerspaces in Europe. In this context, new opportunities for connection between maker activity, society, and business, generated by the sustained growth of these spaces and their potential development, can be justified. In addition, we know the business model, its values, strategies, the conditions of access and adaptation of these spaces, as well as their potential as a business. Identifying and assessing its portfolio of services, type of demand-project by professional or business profiles, competences in the sampled activities linked to the strengthening of soft skills and through technology, with Industry 4.0, will facilitate how to intervene with the different actors of the system
