Feto-material complications in hypertensive disorders of pregnancies at a tertiary care hospital

Abstract Objective: To observe Feto-maternal complications seen in hypertensive disorders of pregnancies managed at a tertiary care hospital Study Design: Cross-sectional survey Place & duration of study: Two year study conducted at CMH Lahore from January 2012 to January 2014 Methods: All pregnant patients booked at CMH Lahore ,diagnosed with a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy were included in the study after informed consent. Patients were followed throughout their pregnancy and at time of delivery. The fetal and maternal complications that occurred were noted. Results: A total of 200 patients with hypertensive disorder of pregnancy were included in the study. Out of these, 90 cases were PIH, 50 were chronic hypertension, 40 were of pre eclampsia and 04 of HELLP syndrome. The most common maternal complication observed was placental abruption seen in 12 cases of pre eclampsia, 10 cases of PIH and 04 cases of chronic hypertension. The next most common complication was coagulopathy seen in pre eclampsia in 03 cases, in 04 cases of eclampsia and 04 of HELLP syndrome. Amongst fetal complications, most common was preterm delivery seen in 16 cases of pre eclampsia , followed by early neonatal death in 08 cases of pre eclampsia and growth restriction in 07 cases of preeclampsia. These complications were also observed in few cases of eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. Conclusion: From the study it is concluded that even in a tertiary care setup with good obstetric care facilities, feto maternal complications occur frequently in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. It is the need of the hour to look into our care facilities to see what we can do to decrease these complications. Keywords: Feto-maternal complications, Hypertensive disorders of pregnanc
