The detection of GW170817 by Advanced LIGO triggered electromagnetic follow-up by ground and space-based observatories which led to the detection of coincident short-lived gamma-ray and longer lasting kilonova emission ~2kpc from the centre of host galaxy NGC4993. Two of the main observational challenges are the very large localisation regions from ALIGO/Virgo and the swiftly decaying transients expected from Neutron Star - Neutron Star and Black Hole - Neutron Star mergers.
