Ocuserts are sterile ocular preparations that may follow a controlled release technique to extend medication residence duration and reduce nasolacrimal discharge. The goal of the ocuserts is to improve medication contact with conjunctiva tissue to sustain consistent dosage release. Uniform ocular medication levels decrease systemic side effects, minimizes dose, boosting patient compliance. Ocuserts are prepared by solvent casting, glass substrate, and melt extrusion technique. Modified ocuserts may be used to obtain desired medication concentration for a given time at the site of action. Extended corneal contact duration is the major success in ocular medication delivery.
