The internal evolution of bars promotes the vertical movement of stars that eventually will form boxy/peanut structures. Most attention has been paid to this bar-related galaxy component in the last years, mostly due to the discovery of a box/peanut in our own Milky-Way. In this talk I present an overview of their observational properties and some examples about the importance of boxy/peanut structures in galaxy evolution studies
